Knowledge is power, in the opinion of project leader Rob van der Linden. That’s why ARN Advisory is constantly measuring the presence and amounts of environmentally harmful substances in wrecked cars. According to Van der Linden, ARN Advisory does this not only by keeping a careful eye on the market, but also by carrying out statistical and practical research.

Recycling in practice
Van der Linden says, “The composition of cars is constantly changing. For ARN, it’s a challenge to keep new materials and recycling methods suited to each other. In other words, how do we prepare the recycling sector for the new (and soon-to-be old) materials which are coming onto the market? We have to keep informing and training businesses to this end. For instance, think of the arrival of airbags and seat belt retractors, or hybrid cars.

Processing tests
“We also have to deal with European laws and regulations. The Netherlands has to send an annual report to Brussels about the achieved recycling results for wrecked cars. We regularly carry out shredder tests (processing tests) in order to obtain clarity about the status of the achieved recycling results. Coordinating a shredder test requires specific knowledge about the company organising the test. ARN Advisory has that knowledge. That’s why we supervise the shredder tests and the EU reports for the Netherlands.”
