Sustainability Certificate for PON dealer organization
The ‘Erkend Duurzaam Plus’ sustainability certification process is due to get underway at the Dutch Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle and Audi dealer organization. This is the result of close cooperation between the car importer Pon’s Automobielhandel, the Dealer Council and BOVAG Autodealers.
First shipment leaves Tiel
Over the past months the people at the new PST plant in Tiel have been working hard to start up a fully integrated processing line. And with success. Because despite a few minor teething problems, the first shipment of finished material was collected and transported to Galloo Plastics in France on 3 November.
D-Day 2011: Priorities for 2012
Working together to fight unfair competition, reward quality and ensure that more cars find their way to ARN companies: these are among ARN’s priorities for 2012 which were extensively highlighted during D-Day 2011 on 7 November in the Efteling entertainment park. D-Day is the day on which ARN gets together with the car dismantlers to evaluate the past year and look forwards to the next. Managing Director Arie de Jong and Auto Recycling Manager Aarnout van Duuren homed in on the most important developments during their presentations.
Disposal fee in 2012 maintained
For cars, the disposal fee in 2012 will be maintained at €45 (including VAT) for each newly-registered vehicle. The disposal fee makes it possible to meet the legal obligation to achieve 95% recycling by 2015. With this in mind, ARN collaborates with more than 300 businesses in the used vehicle chain. The PST plant opened in 2011 plays an important role in achieving the final most challenging percentage points. ARN also undertakes considerable research into new processing methods for residual materials from vehicles.
Sustainable composite panels
During the innovation relay event (Innovatie Estafette) held on 4 October in Rotterdam, ARN and Holland Composites Innovations (HCI) presented the Crusca composite panel material developed jointly by the two organisations. In the words of Reyer Velema of ARN Advisory, “There has long been demand for a solid and sustainable panel material, hence visitors to the trade event responded enthusiastically to his new invention.”
D-Day: ‘Enchant the day!’
Because car dismantling companies are essential to the recycling process, ARN annually calls upon them to evaluate the past year, and consider what the new year is set to bring, on D-Day. Monday 7 November is once again D-Day, and it promises to be an enchanting day. Unfortunately, the date for registration has passed, but for those businesses that have registered, do not forget to mark the date in your diary!
Hard at work optimising performance of PST plant
The new PST plant in Tiel was opened at the end of April, and the processing line was commissioned in Mid-September. Plant director Hans van de Greef commented, “We are currently hard at work eradicating the teething problems before switching the installation to maximum capacity.”
ARN customer Booltink finalist in BOVAG awards
Autobedrijf Booltink based in Leuth ended up in second place in this year’s Car Business of the Year awards. The achievement was announced during the BOVAG Annual Conference on 4 October. The business achieved very high scores in customer satisfaction, service, image and corporate social responsibility. The latter element – CSR – received a major boost over the past twelve months, thanks to collaboration with ARN.
ARN and RDW assist vehicle recycling in Russia
Last Thursday 20 October 2011 the Dutch RDW (vehicle compliance authority) and the Russian Nizhny Novgorod University signed a letter of intent to cooperate. The aim is to help the Russian vehicle industry to set up and integrate recycling into the vehicle production chain.
Bosch Car Service Centrum Eemnes wins Friday afternoon pizza
Garage firms can win a round of Friday afternoon pizzas this summer. All they need to do is hand in their spent oil to ARN and guess how heavy the batch of oil is. If they guess the right amount of kilogrammes, they win a round of pizzas for the whole firm! Last week Bosch Car Service Centrum from Eemnes came out as the winner.
Leakage flows, part 3: Stopping leakage flows together with other parties
What is ARN doing together with other firms to prevent leakage flows? Besides private disassembly and export registrations, end-of-life vehicles also disappear in the chain.
ARN Recycling laboratory up and running
ARN now has a fully-equipped laboratory. In this laboratory, the composition of the incoming material, the shredder residue (SR) and end fractions such as fibres and plastics can be determined.
Win a pizza with your waste oil
Hand in your waste oil to ARN this summer for your chance to win a Friday afternoon pizza for all your colleagues. Guess the amount of kilograms when you register your waste oil batch. You can do this on the registration form for the collection of waste oil on the extranet. If your guess is correct, you stand a chance of winning a round of pizzas for all your colleagues!
LIFE+ subsidy contributes to recycling performance
On 20 July last it was announced that ARN Recycling had been granted the Life+ subsidy of the European Commission of around EUR 1 million. LIFE+ is the European subsidy programme for the development and implementation of the European nature and environment policy. The PST project fits well within the general purpose of the subsidy, since it strives to implement the 95% recycling target in the European ELV Directive.
Leakage flows, part 2: How ARN is trying to reduce leakage flows
Starting from 1 January 2011 ARN Auto recycling has raised the bonus for the correct removal of end-of-life vehicles to the shredder to €10 per end-of-life vehicle. This bonus is only paid if it can be demonstrated that the end-of-life vehicle reached the shredder and if the accompanying transportation form states the correct Eural Code (16.01.06). Other Eural codes are not eligible for the bonus.
Module D for ‘clean sand’ production
Module D from the PST line has processed its first material. Module D is designed to ensure that the mineral fraction genuinely consists as much as possible of sand (mineral material). Carbon provides an indication of the non-mineral content of the material. This quantity must be less than eight per cent in the end product of the module (and hence of the factory). The clean end product is suitable for several specific applications, such as backfilling in worked out mines.. In this way, part of the car material is re-used.
Leaks: the whys and wherefores
Research has revealed the existence of "leaks”- vehicles that are missing from the recycling system. In theory, all vehicles deregistered with the Government Road Transport Agency (RDW) for dismantling should effectively arrive at the shredder. In practice however the situation is very different. The explanation previously given by ARN Auto Recycling was an increase in the number of end-of-life vehicles waiting to be dismantled at the car dismantling businesses. But this cannot be the case year after year. After all, there is a limit to the storage capacity available to a car dismantling company.
ARN and RDW due to collaborate closely on new technology in vehicles
ARN and the RDW (Government Road Transport Agency) have for years been working closely together on the deregistration of end-of-life vehicles in the Netherlands. The arrival of new technology, such as electrical vehicles, now calls for a more specific approach when it comes to deregistration. In addition to the traditional details required for vehicle registration, it is now also necessary, among other things, to record the battery type present in the car. The dismantling company can use this information to deal with the car safely and in the correct manner.
Module C – processing the light fraction (fibres)
Over the past few weeks, a number of modules for the plant were explained in the newsletter. This time we will be discussing the first expansion of module C, a component installed just before the spectacular opening on 28 April last.
BOVAG and ARN join forces
In addition to the scan for the Approved Sustainability certificate from BOVAG and the ARN Environmental Scan from ARN Recycling Services, there is now an integrated scan available: Approved Sustainability Plus. The collaboration between ARN and BOVAG now makes it possible for garages and car dealerships to make a choice from three scans, each with their own character and their own price label.
ARN’s PST plant officially opened by Secretary of State Joop Atsma
On 28 April, ARN's new PST plant was opened with an official ceremony at which Secretary of State Atsma did the honours. The plant will make an important contribution to achieving the 95% recycling target for end-of-life vehicles. This statutory target must have been achieved by 2015.
Recycling percentage of end-of-life vehicles receives major boost
In 2010, 95.3% by weight of all end-of-life vehicles in the Netherlands was recycled. This fact was revealed in the sustainability report published this week by ARN. The recycling percentage rose by almost 10%, in just one year. This rise was brought about by the fact that since March 2010, waste-to-energy plants with R1 status have been allowed to incinerate shredder waste. The incineration of shredder waste is an alternative for landfilling, and is allowed to be included in the overall recycling performance
Car dismantling companies follow training course in Tiel
On Thursday 14 April last, employees of car dismantling companies took part in the training course Neutralisation of airbags and seatbelt tensioners, given at the new research facility in Tiel. This course, organised under the auspices of ARN Auto Recycling, was the first activity organised in the new facility. The training programme was developed and implemented in collaboration with Genius, a company specialising in the recycling of airbags and seatbelt tensioners removed from cars.
Electrical vehicle fleet
ARN Advisory is currently working on a study into the existing fleet of electrical cars and hybrid vehicles in use in the Netherlands. This study is part of the SAFEBAT project. The aim of the SAFEBAT project is to develop a safe and environmentally-sound management structure for batteries from electrical vehicles.
ARN concludes study into fabrication and scrapping of safe ships
In recent times, ARN has not exclusively been focusing on the interface between recycling and automobility. On behalf of the world association of super yacht builders (SYBAss), a project relating to the shipbuilding sector was recently concluded; new legislation has been proposed in order to make the scrapping of ships safer and more environmentally-friendly. The results of the study have made clear to shipyards just what they can expect, and how they need to respond to the possible new legislation.
ARN tests the durability of its chain with Ecotest
Just like other organisations, ARN is confronted with a world that is changing. Recycling is no longer the only sustainability aspect that is being examined; CO2 emissions, toxicity, biodiversity and land use are also important benchmarks for sustainability. In order to obtain an insight into these indicators of sustainability ARN Advisory, in collaboration with Ffact, has developed the Ecotest.
PST in the spotlight: primary separation (module A)
People are currently working hard to get the PST plant ready for the opening on Thursday 28 April. To this end hundreds of metres of electrical cable are being installed daily and many tests undertaken. In this newsletter we explain to you what happens during primary separation in module A.
Care improvement process starts
In 2010 ARN Recycling Services carried out an ARN Environmental Scan at all branches of Care Schadeservice (claim and repair services) and compiled an improvement plan. This improvement process will shortly be implemented at all Care branches in collaboration with Van Gansewinkel. This represents the implementation of Care’s ambition to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in three years time.
Summary of changes to dismantling process
ARN Auto Recycling recently informed all affiliated car dismantling companies about the changing dismantling process. The PST plant contributes to achievement of the statutory recycling objective of 95%. As a result of the arrival of the PST plant part of the manual dismantling is replaced by mechanical separation techniques. Let’s give a brief overview.
